Does anyone know where to find the part number for the gearbox or even better know the part number for it? Also does anyone have one for sale or know where i may be able to get one or even a good independent garage (in the North West) that could repair the faulty one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as am without car until fixed

The gearbox code will be on the top of the bell housing and also printed on the vehicle data sticker on the boot floor and in the service book. The series code is 085 and the version code will be either ETG or FFW. The part number for a new box (well exchange) from VW is 085 300 053 LX and they cost £1160. To be frank, this box is out of its depth on this engine, every single 6N2 GTI I have ever encountered has needed a box or already had one. Finding a used unit will be extremely difficult due to the demand and the car not having sold very well. A rebuild is unlikely to last very long unless it is built to a very high standard. My advice would be to go for a VW exchange unit as these come with a two year guarantee. The other option is to convert to the Lupo GTI 6 speed but this is very involved and you would need to find a donor car first.

Many thanks for the info. I have now identified the gearbox type on the car from the label in the boot, couldnt get it from the Bell Housing as the gearbox had already been rebuilt last year . Now on the lookout for the right gearbox and then the car is being sold.
