    Hi Guys,

Just wanted to get a few expert opinons on this matter. The oil light came on, on the dash - naturally think it needs oil. Check levels, it's a bit low, so stick some more oil in. Light doesn't disappear. Being stupid, continue driving and now looks like I may have screwed the engine.

It's a 1.8t 2003 BFB engine 163 bhp. It now rattles and sounds like something is tapping (quite loud). I've had a mechanic look at it, and without taking the engine out and checking the oil pump, he rekcons a new engine is in order (Basically the oil pump has gone, and that's common on the turbos from oil gunk build up, and the pump can't cope anymore) . You can't tell how much damage is done until it's stripped down, and apparently that's a whole new can of worms.

My choices are get it stripped, put a new oil pump and see, maybe even get it reconditioned... or straight for a new engine- 2nd hand (prices? been quoted up to £1500). Current one done 50k, and was serviced 2 weeks ago.

Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, suggestions or if they could point me in the right direction, I'd much appreciate it.

    Cheers,

    Amir

Sadly your mechanic is exactly right and is giving you the correct advice.

The options as you have stated are to renew the pump and see if the engine is ok. It probably is not if it is knocking. The other being trying to source another engine.

Agreed, this is an ever increasing problem, driving any car with warning lights lit up is a bad idea in general! Driving an engine thats getting no lubrication is simply going to destroy the internals completely so a rebuild will be as much as a recon engine i'd guess. Just hope you can get hold of a recon engine of the right type, there are several different engine codes for the 1.8T engine, the rarer the type the higher the price! Know of a guy who had this exact problem a year ago & had engine code AVJ, cost him a good few grand for a new engine as it was a rare one!

    Hi all

    New here so be kind.

Turbo charged, i had the same problem, basicly blew the oil pump on a holiday journey, about 7 miles from an Audi garage red oil warning light came on stopped and checked oil, was ok, went to nearest petrol station and put 0.5ltr in, continued journey 1/2 mile later red light again.....hmm decided to limp into Audi garage.....explained all this to the tech at Audi...bad news he thinks...he said NEVER drive with red warning on...so ive learnt my lesson.

I think i may i must have had angel gabriel by my side that day, Audi report was ok checked for red oil warnig light on, oil level ok and traced to oil pump failure, supplied and fitted new pump, strainer and oil seal.Tested for damage and all seemed ok.....i think i was VERY lucky.Just to let you know all that work from Audi cost me £510.This happened aug 2006 and still all ok.

A4 1.8t SE with one of those expensive AVJ engines?
Hope you get it sorted, but i thought i would let u know what audi would cost if you decided to go down the route of getting it stripped.

    J

    That was my first thought!!!

I'd be going back to who ever serviced it andhaving a go at them, might be able to get something out of them. Especially if it was done by Audi!!

I have over the years 1.8 t was produced lost count of the repairs i have done for this issue but only a few full engines needed replacing due to the turbo letting go and spitting its contents into the inlet due to oil starvation. And the camshafts bearing casings wearing away but 80% of the time its just a good clean out and flush of the oil system and breather system.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Most helpful. I've checked out a load of other posts here as well.
I've now had the oil pump changed and the oil flushed through.
The car now seems to run ok, and was run for about 4 or 5 hours.
All the noises have gone and it drives as normal again. However... the turbo now makes a rather different whiny noise. Previsouly you'd hear it a bit as you got over 2500rpm which was normal, now it makes a kind of more hissing and scratchy (if that's the right word) noise when it spools.
Over 3000 rpm it's fine and sounds normal, only weird when spooling up and you can also hear it when letting off.
Also when idle, small amounts of white smoke, but more than normal.
I've read a bit on here that this could be linked to turbo going.
    Any advice ?

    Much appreciated.

    Amir

You could be very very lucky here overall!! The engine oil is circulated through the turbo to lubricate it, given the speeds it spins at there's likely damage done to the turbo bearings due to oil starvation. I suggest you have a turbo re-build done asap!
