    Hi,

I joined this forum a month ago when i got my golf and already...i need to replace my starter motor! .......I have a few questions if you would be so kind

In my haynes manual it says that all engines except codes ABU, ABD & AEA have the starter motor located at the front and that you need to support the engine to change the starter as it shares its mounting bolts with the front engine bracket.

Although i cant find my engine code, it look as though mine is located at the front as its just behind the radiator. How do i support the engine? Is it something a novice should attempt?

How much should i expect to pay for a starter motor from a scrappy?

Does the starter motor need to be a specific model/code etc.?

    Thanks in advance

    Matt

    Hi,

    Its a 1.8 SE

It began by making strange screechin type noises coming from the starter motor when i turned the ignition. I gave it a tap with a hammer and it started and the noise was not there once the car was running. It did this over a few days and the noise gradualy got worse each time i went to start the car. Now it just makes a single clicking noise when i turn the key and it wont start at all.

I have had it checked by some guys at work and also my insurance breakdown service. Both said its the starter.

I take it you have a battery in good condition/charge and that your Earth connection is good and clean and tight?

Sounds like the drive pinion grease has dried out. This can be relubed or it could be worn - equally so can a second hand part. Try http://www.vwaudibreakers.co.uk/PartsForm.htm

for a price. I have used them quite a few time and they are honest and good.

To remove the starter you have to remove the bolt through the front engine mount. You can support the engine with a stout bit of wood under the sump supported by a scissor jack or similar. The pinion is visible once the starter is out. I've not done this on my MK3 only an old MK1 Jetta (shows how reliable they are!). My got bad in a similar way. I carried a small hammer to tap the starter solenoid on each start. Got a recon one for about £25 - bit that was about 15 years ago :¬(
