The part number is 028 906 040 C and it costs £18.47. You will also need “O” ring 028 130 717 A at £3.42. The problem is the sensor is in the injection pump under the top cover which is retained by a tamper proof bolt and technically speaking you should not attempt to change the senor as the positioning of the cover is critical. VW’s own manual says to replace the injection pump should the temp sender be faulty. I take the pump to a local diesel injection pump specialist and he changes the sensor for me.

    Hi
I have not posted here much, but as crasher says the temp sensor is under the top cover, this can be removed with the aid of a special socket as it is not this cover that is critical but it is the housing below it which is still held in place with other bolts.
Not trying to prove anybody wrong here.

I admit that I never go in there as the manual warns against it plus I have only seen a few fail.

I agree not that common, see more pumps with broke springs and with the bucking problem but have done a few on edc ve pumps.

hongkongstuey if you want to double check serial tool, resistance check on pump terminals 7 & 4 cold around 2.5-3 kohm running temp 300-400 ohm

the part i have received is 038 906 081 B, from looking at the part, it is definately not in the pump at all, looks more like its inline with the fuel line somewhere, my car isnt a pd engine, but it has the same plug on top as the green coolant temp sensor for pd engines, but obviously isnt the coolant sensor

    Hi
This temp sensor is small, you could have the inline pd temp sensor there, that sits in the return line.
Can we post pictures here do you know?
Your best bet is to note the bosch pump number and go along to your local official bosch diesel centre where they repair pumps, they will get you one, if not probably got one here.

038 906 081 B is the fuel return temp sender for a PD TDI (such as an AJM engine), you have been supplied the wrong part.

Tell the parts muppet that the part you need is (for a 99 Passat with an AFN or VAG engine) on illustration 130-20, item 29 and part number 028 906 040 C.

thanks guys, i did think it was the wrong part once i'd got it home, having the later type plug on it did make me suspect it was wrong, i'll take it back monday and see what they have to say about it!

thing is, i gave them my chassis number to do the check and the guy ordered one, then it was a different guy when i went in again to get the part, this is vw stafford, they hardly ever have any parts there and then, its always 'i'll order you one in for tommorow' but they are actually cheaper than gsf and euro car parts once you add on postage and irritation time waiting for the part to arrive.
