Getting a decent deal is important, but presenting oneself as a tight ***** git who is prepared to use any tactic to save the last farthing is another!!

Just remember that if you accept a decent discount yet allow the dealer to make a bit it does wonders for your ongoing relationship with them. I have bought 9 new cars from Wayside Group VW and Audi in the last 11 years and had brilliant service as a result!

I get a great price every time without having to lower myself to 'spiv' tactics! Just my opinion of course!!

I agree to a certain degree fazerman: if you beat up the dealer lots, you will leave the less room to manoeuvre in the future, and of course they may not like you as much as the people who pay list price.

If you can get a relationship like yours (i.e. a great price every time) then there is no problem, but from my experience dealers behave very very differently.

I have bought several Pugs through a local dealer and we now have a simlar relationship to what you have described: I go to him with a request, he offers a cracking deal from the start (14%+), I order the car, and all is well.
But if i hadn't 'beaten' him up at the start, would I be getting such a good deal? I reckon not.

I guess overall it really depends on how many cars you are likely to buy over time, and what your local dealer is like. At the end of the day, the dealer isn't going to sell a car to you if it isn't worth his while.

I think I am going to give it a go putting them against the broker and see what happens. I don't mind paying slightly more to a dealer but if it is not close then they don't get my business.

I have been courting a local dealer for a while and they have had a firm "no discount this is a new car" stance - however we haven't got to the ordering process yet - I know exactly what I want and I am prepared to walk away for the dealer if they won't get close to the broker price. I'm averaging a 13% saving via motorlogix which gives me an almost £34k list price car for under £30k and that is with the broker fee - one poster has already used motorlogix and said he had no issues whatsoever.
