The tailgate is shut and the something has become disconnected in the locking mechanism, as the central locking and key won't open it.

Any ideas on how to get it open without to much damage?
    It's a mk3 golf.

Just to answer my own question, drill 1/4 hole about 2" up from bottom of inner plastic cover and 1" to nearside off centre line. Then poke through with 6" long screwdriver and feel for upright lever, give this a push to one side (off side direction) and the tailgate unlocks.
Must now go and repair the bigger hole I made to start with!!!!!
