I have recently bought a 1.8GTI T 02 plate with 79k on the clock. the service history book shows that the cambelt was changed at around the 60k mark but i had doubts wether it had been written in by the dealer or previous owner to make the car sell for more money.

I called the garage who supposedly had carried out the service and cambelt and unfortunately he does not have a computer record, still files all his papers so took a while to track down the paperwork.

He's saying that he has no record of replacing the cambelt but has found record of the service, so to summarise,

    • The service history book shows cambelt replaced
    • The garage where the work was supposedly carried out have no record of it.
What should i do? If the cambelt goes ive been told it a £grand to re-build.

I called a couple of garages who told me that there is no way of telling wether a cambelt has been in for 20k or 80k miles so i'm stuffed.

    A new cambelt + tensioners = £210

    Any thoughts/comments

    cheers

I am with you on this one. Better to be safe than sorry. Also at the same time do the waterpump because if that goes after you have done the cambelt you will have to pay out the same sort of money again!!

Get it done pal, water pump as well, VW recommend pump as well when doing a cambelt service.

    Piece of mind.

Ive had it done and the car has developed a squeeky belt as it ticks over and sounds rough. Took it back to the garage who informed me that they had to remove the auxilary belt? which powers the steering and air con and when they replaced it, it has not been put back on properly and causing a squeek. they are fitting a new belt free of charge.
