I'm in the process of buying the A6 limited edition with the standard stereo system, can anyone advise me if it's worth spening the extra £600 on the Bose system, and how much difference it makes to the sound quality???

    Thanks

You dont say wich year but on my old a4 had bose wich sounded amasing compared with standard set up. You wont believe what difference an aftermarket head unit does to a standar bose speaker system. To be honest, i have 6 grand worth of audiobahn/directed/pioneer/MB Quart/alumapro worth of gear in my cupboard in their boxes wich i did not used due to the bose sound system ! I was close to instal these in my a4 avant with stock speakers but missus decided its time to sell the car due to lack of use....the perspex box alone costed me 350 quid to build !

If you have an Ipod, then I would suggest that you will get more enjoyment from having an interface for that fitted instead of an upgrade to Bose stuff. I have a 2004 a6 with the standard concert stereo and speakers and prefer the sound of mine to my friends 2007 A6 with the Bose setup. OK it may not be set up to my taste, but I do appreciate good sound, having a top quality Arcam hi-fi at home.

I have a 05 plate A6 with the standard set up. The quality of the sound is Ok, but for that little bit extra I would advise to go with the Bose. My mate has an A8 with the Bose set up and the difference is astounding. I bought mine as an ex-demo so I had to take what I was given at the time.

Does anyone know if I can upgrade my system without having to pull the car apart and upgrade all the speakers etc.?

It definitely is a good system, better than the original. As for being £600 better, well depends how easy it is to afford the extra £600.

If I was spec'ing up a new A6 though, I'd tick the box.....
Current - 2002 Audi A6 2.5TDi Avant quattro (loved), 2012 Ford S Max 2.2 tdci Titanium X (serves a purpose), 1983 VW Golf GTI campaign (loved)
Previous - 2007 Volvo XC90 D5 SE Lux (gone, hated), 2002 Audi A3 1.9TDi Sport quattro (gone, liked and missed), 2011 Audi A6 2.0TDi SE (gone, loved and missed), 2007 Audi A6 2.0TDi SE (gone thankfully), 1999 Audi A6 2.5TDi quattro (gone, loved and missed)

i had the bose system in my old a6, which was a 1998 reg. that was avery nice system, perfectly balanced and you could turn it up and the clarity was stil perfect! put many boy racers to shame, i could be heard before i was seen :P
id say its wel worth it for the sheer sound quality!

IMHO Bose is rather like Bang & Olufsen, it's lovely styling, looks cool but when it comes to it, the sound is not worth the price uplift.
If you want to have lots of kit in your car which has flashing lights and has lots of visual appeal, fine but what I want from a stereo is performance from a sound perspective.
I have listened to loads of Bose kit, mostly home cinema systems all of which are in the 3000-4000 pound bracket and quite frankly they don't measure up.
You either have too much bottom end without the treble punching through or the sound appears over bright without any low end frequency grunt!
This is obviously quite subjective as what sounds like heaven to one can be uninspiring to another, personally, I'd spend it on upgrading a system but it wouldn't be BOSE.
