Best to get sorted as can lead to other problems.
    I've got exactly the same problem, and the mechanic told me its the belts as well, ave had the problem for a month now, really should get it replaced and the timing belt and the water pump.... what can i say times are hard, cant afford to do all that at once.

    can i just ask, does this forum recognise html?? if i need to ad a link, do i do it in html format or what.

    I would be interested in fixing problem myself,would anyone have done this repair before?

    Haynes manual tells you how to do it but it seems to involve stuff like removing bumper, removing lock carrier etc. Seems straightforward enough if you have the skills.

    That said, I asked a local garage if they would do it for me and they balked at the thought of bumper and lock carrier removal.

    Took it to a specialist independent instead, cost a bit over £100.

    Peace of mind for a non-technical owner.

    Hi,
    Well mine has just been done.
    I have an 02 Reg tdi, the tensioner part was now a mod and cost £90
    The labour was 2 hrs;
    - result the car feels like its back connected to the road.
    The mechanic mentioned that these aux belts can fail and cause more serious damage.

    anyone have a soft copy of Haynes manual,or know where i get one for 02 model,i have the manual for the 1995-2000 model.
    i am still interested in doing repair myslef.
    im not afraid of taking the bumper off.just cautious of the power steering belt and removing the tensioner.
    Will i have to touch the timing belt to remove the tensioner.if so i'll leave to the professionals to fix.

    Hi I have a passat tdi highline, 04 plate. When the engine is revved there is a rattling sound comes from underneath the bonet as if some part of the car is catching some moving parts in the engine. The sound goes higher when gear change is imminent, but as soon as the car goes on higher gear the sound goes down and up again before the next gear shift. Any idea people ? Much appreciated. Thanks.
