i had rattle from engine cover which sits on top of engine, was cured by putting some rubber grommets on the studs before screwing cover back on.

cheers, but definately not engine cover, thinking it could be transmission related, but like i said, difficult to pinpoint where its coming from.being a diesel doesnt help much either in the noise department...

I think I have the same issue.
There is a low rattle/hum at tick over but as soon as the revs go above 1100 it is gone.

From forum trawls I think it the Engine Soleniod Mounts, which have shown up on VAG, so I have a thread open for a diy as I don't know where they are and if they can be changed easiily.

You might want to get it on the diagnostics and keep an eye on my thread

I had a similar rattle a few weeks back. Rattle would also 'pulse' when I pressed the brake pedal when stationary. Any noises from the steering on hard lock??

Turned to be related to the auxiliary drive belt & pulley which was struggling with the load at low revs, i.e. stationary.

Got it fixed - noise gone.

Get it checked sooner rather than later. The guys who fixed mine had seen frayed / broken auxiliary belts take out timing belts ... £100 pulley v's new engine. Its a choice.

AAh, a friend of mine had a nasty rattle/droning/hum from his passat diesel 2002 plate, that turned out to be the auxillary drive belt tensioner and pulley, apparently the pulley has a one way clutch or damper assy which can fail, he also said that the belt tensioner (auxillary) was oil damped as well as spring loaded and the oil had seeped out. Best to get sorted as can lead to other problems.
