    Hi,

    I just bought a 1990 VW Golf MK2 Driver - 5 Dr 1.6,

Basically when i turn the car on, not necasseraliy when in the morning and i turn the steering wheel near full lock, or full lock i get a screeching noise, mostly notice it when i do a u-turn. cant be the fan belt as the noise goes away when the car is driven, but sometimes the noise happen throughout driving.

The previos owner said it was the power steering, any idea???
i dont care if the power steering stops, just get rid of the screeching.

    Thanks

Its most probably the fan belt. Cahnge this and tension it correctly as described in the haynes manual. It will slip more when cold, not sure why, possibly because there is more moisture on th ebelt on a cold morning, or maybe becaue the belt is stiffer when cold.

A quick check to do is to have the engine running and ask someone to turn the steering wheel to the full lock where the squealing occurs. Spray a bit of WD-40 or silicone spray onto the fan belt and the squealing should dissapear. This will tell you its the belt. Doesnt cost much to replaec £5-10.

If its not the belt, it could be the power steering pump, but I doubt it

    Let us know anyways

replace the power steering fluid at least once in the cars life but did you check the fluid level. If the car is lowered the tierod ends wear and cause this screech( i cant explain why). The belt does slip and screech from being too slack,it's a 2 man job to tension but copperslip(a sliver only) or use machine oil for all bolts you undo and torque them a they either strip the thread or snap when abused or corroded.
