    Hi guys,
Im a new member to this site and have read most of the posts but i havent found anything relating to what i need fixed. So i was wondering if anyone can help me out please.

I bought my 1995 Golf VR6 (says manufactured 08/1994) with the fuel gauge not working although all the other guages work like speedo/rev/ engine temp but the fuel guage doesnt work so i just fill up and refill after 300km.
The auto electrician said it could be the Fuel sender unit and it would cost +$350 to fix. I hope to save money and diagnose the problem myself.

so question is, do I haveto drop the fuel tank to get to the sender unit? or can i get to it from where the spare tyre sits in the boot? And i have tried google to find instructions on how to get to the fuel filter and the sender unit as I want to change the fuel filter aswell.
Also when i fill up now It leaks fuel and drips out under the tank onto the ground It mite be a crack ontop of the tank or maybe cause I parked my car on an angle. This what i read somewhere where the seals corroded as it was submersed in fuel ( I used enthanol mixed fuel at times )

Can anyone tell me where i can get these instructions or can anyone just tell me how to please?Any help would be great thanks.

The sender is accessed from inside the load bay under a black metal disc. The sender is also holds the fuel pump and the whole assembly is awkward to remove. As you have no idea how much fuel is in the tank, you must make sure the tank is quite low as if it is full the fuel will pour out when you remove the “delivery unit” as it is known. The sender module for a petrol engined 95 Golf 3 is 1H0 919 670 and costs £82 in the UK. It is unusual for the sender unit to fail though but very common for the gauge to fail which is specialist work to repair. The fuel filter is under the car on the right hand side. Where are you?

    Hi,
thanks for the reply I will try attempt the fuel filter, so would you say its more an electrical fault to the guage or would it be the sender unit? I mite leave this to an auto electrician. worried i might cause a spark and ignite the tank. I reside in Australia and its reall real hard to source parts for this car. Theres usually only like 7-10 VR6s for sale at a time. I have been surfinf UKs ebay for parts. I rather buy the part at fault for much cheaper off UK then a part sold locally + fitting which usually the mechanics order and charge extra. Do you know of any online shop you could reccoment?

Well I don’t think it is the tank sender that is at fault. Buying a UK instrument panel isn’t going to be much use to you either. I know you antipodean types drive on the correct (left hand) side of the road but you insist on using the flipping French system of kilometres for distance measurement where we use Gods intended miles measurement. I have sent you a PM.
