I have a 2006 A6 Avant 2.7tdi Quattro with 44,000 miles on the clock and for many months now there has been a ticking noise in the engine area. After a number of visits to the local Audi dealer they have finally diagnosed that it has a crack in the cylinder block. - Took ages and at first they didn't agree there was an unusual noise but that is a different story.

This is being repaired under warranty and the dealer has said this is the first time they have come across this. Has anyone else had a similar experience as this seems like a major failure needing major work? I am concerned that by replacing the block the underlying cause won't be diagnosed and I could be in a similar position in a couple of years time. Also, does having a big chunk of the engine replaced effect the future value of the car.

My first post so hope this is an appropriate forum to share this.

    Thanks

I'm not an expert but I would have thought the only way to fix this would be a new block and think you will be very unlucky to have another one fail on you. Would not think it will have any effect on the resale value.

A fresh bottom end is around £3k for the old 2.5tdi v6 not a cheap job for Audi.

Probably just a casting defect that was not detected in the manufacturing of the original engine. Lucky it is still in warranty

Audi are replacing the block under warranty so I guess I am lucky and if it was just a manufacturing defect then it looks like I should have no worries.
