Starting Problem 1.8 Driver

I drive a 1.8 Driver, L reg and have recently been having problems starting the car, especially in the wet

I turn the key and it fires but the engine will not turn over, eventually after doing this a fair few times, it tries to turn over and with a little prod of the accelerator it starts up, however while any quick acceleration it results in really hesistant acceleration, with the revs dropping but then picking up again

I wonder if it is shorting out due to the damp as I ran the car to warm starting in the wet, and then left it to cool down and it started fine later on, although this was when it had dried out

Any suggestions would be greatly received

Hi I would suggest replacing the plug cables,and check the distributor cap, for cracks and signs of tracking
