I have noted that my 2.5TDI has low oil temperature and hovers just above 60 degrees on the temperature guage on the dash. I drove a round trip of 600 miles at the weekend and it crept up a little once I came off the motorway. I understand that the oild is lubricating and is trying to keep the engine cool - but at this cold, is everything working right?. I have done 8,000 miles on the oil and its booked in for a change in July which is about right.

I am hitting a high overall mileage in it now and I of course concerned by any potential engine wear - I want to get 250,000 out of this if I can.

Occassionally I notice a slight difference (deeper) in engine note which I think might be wear on the camshaft/big end - its seems to be mainly when air conditioning is on (I havent used it this year cos of this).

Should I be worried about the low oil temperature, with it being quite so low, is the system working as it should and maintaining engine condition?

It could be the oil temp sender that is faulty. You will need vagcom or another diagnostic tool to read the temp and any fault code that may occur. Sorry can't b more helpfull

I second that opinion, the gauge being faulty.

Well it's been a while since you posted, but I am interested in what you discovered in meantime, because I have it the same. The gauge shows usually 60 degrees. Where oil should be about 100 as long as I know.
But the engine temperature seems be very hot after a while running..

If you have low oil temp, and also low water temp, that would indicate a faulty thermostat.

Oil is thicker when cold, and I do not believe that at 60 degrees wear will be increased. Main issue will be fuel efficiency, which will be down.

Secondary to this will be a richer mixture, which can with time kill the CAT.

Do you know is it an expensive thing such as thermostat to replace it?
    I can't find it in a VAGCOM.

I think it would be probably cheaper than just simple VAG Test at Audi flags.
It would be great if I could have VAG Software in my Laptop, I know.
    Thanks.

Mine ran at 90* water temperature and ~70* oil temp. That seemed normal for the 2.5 and 1.9 TDIs - I just don't think diesels get their oil that hot

are we talking engine oil temperature? or automatic gearbox oil temperature? can't think of ever having a car with an engine oil temperature guage? engine oil coolers are usually oil/water,with the engine coolant(cooled by the radiator)controlling the oil temp.
transmission coolers could be either water/oil,----or air/oil.
either way, the top temp would be the one to worry about, and if it rose above engine coolant temp of 90deg, then it would push up the engine temp if a water/oil cooler. i wouldn't worry about lower temps,as i'm sure a "bypass valve" would be fitted to protect the cooler against over pressure
should the oil be cold. modern engine oils protect the engine very well indeed, even at the lowest temperatures.

    stewy.

When the engine is at operational temperature 88 to 90 degrees the engine oil temp is nromally a nominal 75 to 80 degrees. If you push hard then this can raise to 90/95. 100 is abnormal in the ambient temp of the UK unless towing uphill. The temp sensor is mounted in a block with the pressure sensor switch to the left of the oil filter. Check the connections for signs of contact corrosion, if you have a meter measure the reistance when hot and report back. Depending on your engine code you may have the temp sesor as part of your oil level sensor mounted in the bottom of your sump. Regards Peter
