I appreciate this has been covered before in some detail and i am grateful for the topics and advice contained within so I wont go through all the problems, but my question is this. I took my vehicle to a Bosch diesel specialist centre who were recommended to me, for a diagnostic check of the car, because of the fault with the turbo cutting out. I was going to go to VW but felt this might be a tad cheaper. (The test cost me £56 - not really sure if that was cheap)
The vehicle in question is a W reg passat estate PD 115bhp, with 181,000 miles.
The result of the test which took about an hour was that I had no printout containing any fault codes merely an invoice which stated
"Read fault codes in vehicle ECU system. Faults logged reference turbo overboost. Disconnect vacuum control pipe to turbo and check vacuum supply. With pipe disconnected, vehicle is still suffering with overboost, fault indicating variable vane turbo possibly sticking".
I asked for a printout of the codes and was met with a blank expression from the counter staff as if to say "why would you want that". (They talked about a new turbo at £800 fitted or remove and clean the old one for £340 fitted). Eventually the mechanic who performed the test stated he hadnt cleared the codes from the cars memory so he popped into the car and retrieved them with his testing machine. The code he quoted me was 462D, which from searching the web doesnt mean an awful lot.

To my questions - having decided this is either sticking vanes (from the diagnostic report and reading other threads), or possibly something simple and cheap like a new thrust sensor etc. is there much point me going back to demand the test be done again and a printout of the correct codes supplied, or are they "in the right area" regarding possible faults.
I am tempted to remove the turbo and have it cleaned after I have done some of the tests in other threads, but am just a bit miffed that these experts may have sold me short.

I paid £56 and didnt even get a bloody printout.....

Just wondered what part of the world you are in groomoid, as it may be better to find a good independant garage that won`t rip you off but has the knowledge and equipment to sort the problem at a sensible cost.

Would it be possible for us to compile such a directory on here for those who have had a positive experience to list the garages to save other posters money/frustration?

I am down in Exeter in Devon. The garage I used was Electro Diesel ltd on Sowton Industrial estate in Exeter.

The problem seems possibly now vacuum pipe related as I havent had the usual problem for about 4 days now after I tinkered around with the pipes. I am going to replace all the relevant pipes about £7 and see where this takes me. My thoughts are the pressure may not be enough (due to leaks) to fully operate the wastegate actuator - Does that make sense?

Disconnecting the thrust sensor makes the car much worse so I think that this sensor is probably okay. This is my common sense simple logic. Any thoughts

I had a similar problem, i took it to vw who only charged £30 for a diagnostic check, They found the vacum pipe had come off hence losing power, they replaced it and charged me £88 ... but at least i got the power back. well worth checking all your pipes.
