    Hi all,
My problem appears to be a fuel delivery problem of some sort, I can drive for a couple of miles, then feel the car starting to cut out, so I pull in, by the time I have managed to get to the hard shoulder the engine has died. If I try to restart it just turns and turns and goes nowhere, but if I leave it a few minutes and try again it still turns over and over, but eventually gets going. I was optomistic that it may be a clogged fuel filter, but alas no....

I haven't yet had it on the diag, but was hoping someone could point me in the right direction before our friendly vw dealer tries to fleece me!!!

    Any help greatly appreciated!!!

Had a similar problem with a Vectra Dti, it was air getting into the fuel recirculation pipes, check for a chaffed hose or loose connection.

I had a similar problem immediatly after a full service. It was the diverter valve on top of the fuel filter, and it was b**gg*red up by the fitting of a "Delphi" brand fuel filter. Seemingly their was a batch of them with the wrong dimensions where the diverter fits.(it was too tight)
This little plastc bit seems to play a major part in the fuel supply.
It returns fuel back to the tank and trips a microswitch which unless tripped stops the lift pump from delivering to the filter properly.
It about drove my local garage mad (which was brilliant about the bill as they blamed themselves and paid for a flatback lift to the local VW boys and luckily one of the mechanics had experianced this before and fixed in a jiffy). Nowhere in ECTA or ELSAWIN does it show this switch as it is part of the lift pump, and no faults showed up on VAGCOM.
I am not saying this is your problem but it sound similar.
Good Luck with it. Regards Richard

Have you had a fuel filter changed recently? that fits my fuel return air leak theory.

Yes... And I hope for your sake that your problem is listed in the ones already mentioned and not the problem I had with my Rover.

Essentially, mine was cutting out intermittedly for just a second or so (sometimes a bit longer). Eventually I noticed that once the engine was up to temperature, the engine would cut out alltogether when I went in low revs (usually in traffic jams or when approaching traffic lights, etc...). It would take a while before I could start the engine again.

Car went to 5 different garages. The first 4 admitted there was indeed a serious fault but they couldn't pinpoint what it was. The 5th garage took 4 days to find out what it was... The diesel timing pump had gone and it would have cost me £1800 to get that fixed...

Thanks for all the advice!.... I think I may have sorted it out! I brought the car to a garage to put it on the diag this morning, but before I left, I took the cover off the fuel pump and gave it a couple of bangs with the persuader. I had no cutouts on the 15 mile trip, and the diag showed up no problems, and had no previous faults listed, so when I got home, again without incident, I took the pump out altogether and cleaned it. It was absolutely black with dirt! even inside the filter at the bottom of the pick up was full of s*@t. I toyed with the idea of a new pump altogether, but a spurious from the auto factors was going to cost 440 euro.... so I think I'll just give the newly spick and span pump time to prove itself.....

    Fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!!
