Back to being in two minds about which to get.

My insurance quote is coming up the same for the Petrol 2.0 GTi as it is for the Diesel 1.9 GT TDi 150.

    GT TDi is around 50mpg

    GTi is around 35mpg

The 1.6 is around 40mpg although i've not done a quote for my insurance for this yet.

    Not sure which is best?

I have more choice of cars in the petrol than i do with the diesels and the diesels tend to have higher mileage....

    Any comments, advice?

Um yes but my insurance is about £200 more a year on that for some reason so am counting that one out!

Just between the 1.6, 2.0 GTi and 1.9 GT TDi

I personally would go for the 1.9TD (PD130), a great engine if it has been looked after.

A bit of searching would highlight what to look out for with them.

Just make sure full service history and cambelt interval changes have been done to schedule

I'll be honest I got my first TDI a few months ago and although there doesn't seem to be as much grunt and pull throughout the rev range as my old 2litre 8v the savings are immense. never less than 45mpg for tdi compared to 25mpg 2litre 8v. TDI will be easier to tune as well even you want more power

I think you'll probably find the majority of people would encourage you to go for the tdi - good trusty engine, not to mention high mpg. But it all depends on how much mileage you do. If like me your annual mileage is quite low, then you might not get the most out of a diesel so maybe a petrol might be more for you. I drive a 1.8T and have no worries regarding fuel consumption, in fact I find it quite good for a petrol engine of its size.
But at the end of it, it's all down to personal preferences! Let us know what you get!

HI difficult is'nt ,I went diesel as I do bigger miles 25 to 30k a year but the wife has just bought petrol as she only puts 10 to 12k miles a year and at todays prices it was best bet for her saved 1800 on cost of car and she won't forget and put the wrong fuel in!!!!
Also some people who are used to petrol just dont get on the oil burners , I love petrol for fast and diesel for economy.Saying that my 1.9 tdi 110 is as good to drive as most of the petrols I've had.
So back to the begining difficult is'nt it. The choice is yours but it really comes down to your annual mileage

Why would ANYONE buy the 2.0 8v????????? Unless that is if your plannin on whakin' a supercharger on it!

    The performance figures are poor.

From what you have suggested the TDI 150 would be the option but the difference in price is substantial, you will probly end up paying an extra £4000 for a tdi 150 than a 2.0 GTI!

Like already mentioned, id either go for the TDI 130 (still quite expensive) or the 1.8 GTI.

And as for the 1.6, i think your figures are wrong, i have a 1.6 and im sure its only 33mpg, less than the 1.8 T!

In the real world the TDI is much much faster than the 2.0.

I'g go so far as to say a 150hp TDI is even quicker than a standard 1.8 T 150hp petrol, I'd liken it to the 180hp 1.8T petrol. The 130hp TDI is comparible to the 150hp 1.8T

I do say in the real world as both 1.8T's in a drag race would have the edge and the top end will be more but (real world) 30-90mph, where it counts, the TDI's will beat the petrols.

The 2.0 8v was out of date when VW put it in the MK3 Golf, let alone the MK4 !!

The 2.0 GTi on the continent is not a GTi it is a GLX. So the 150 TDI all the way.

Use VW's used car locator - its great.
