Don't think it's readily changeable, but apparently it's a legal requirement to have a km/h speedo capability, thus the readout fulfills that purpose.

Conventional speedos have a km/h reading on the inside of the dial, but not the Passat.

Not sure precisely what you mean by 'pop', but on my estate the button just unlocks the tailgate if it's already locked. For example, one click on the remote unlocks the driver's door only on my car (although it may be configured to open all the doors on other cars), thus the button can be used to unlock the tailgate without unlocking all the other doors, as can the tailgate button on the remote. (Pressing the remote twice unlocks all the doors, including the tailgate.)

If by 'pop' you mean actually opening slightly, then I don't think it does that, at least on my Passat! The fuel release button actually does 'pop' the fuel flap in that it opens it slightly.

It says in section 3.1 of my saloon handbook you can toggle between odometer & kph speed by holding down the 0.0 (trip reset) button with ignition on and vehicle stationary, until the change occurs. I've not tried it. I just keep the kph which is far more useful abroad than any secondary scale on the main dial. I've no use for the total mileage when driving. The trip mileage meets my needs.

On the saloon the button fully opens the boot lid but thats not sensible on an estate because when opening the bottom of the tailgate describes an arc outside the boundaries of the vehicle so could strike something close behind or above the vehicle in a confined space like a multi storey car park. I guess there's a danger in just popping the tailgate like the fuel flap if, say, there was an excitable dog in the loadspace just desperate to get out for walkies.

The saloon button shows a graphic of a fully open boot. What does the estate button show?

I started a thread on the mileometer question a month or so back, when I picked up my new Passat. Absolutely right on what it says in the manual.

The thread came to the conclusion though that it can't be changed due to an EU directive (or similar).

I guess it can be changed with VAG-COM, perhaps a chat to your nice dealer?

On the boot pop, it's a shame. On my saloon, if you press the button, the boot lid opens and right to the top. It takes a right shove to get it back down though.

Re closing the boot I've developed the knack of pulling on the internal handgrip on the boot lid with just enough force to overcome the resistance of the gas strut and close it without it slamming.

You have to careful to whip your hand out the way though...

in my manual, it says that the change may not be possible do to local legislation, meaning that we can't. Unless you know someone with VAGcom I believe.

My French kph car reads mph on its digital display, and assuming we all share basically the same software it should be possible with VAGCom, though not necessarily legal. But then, who's going to know?

It certainly doesn't change if I set the MFD to read Imperial.

I asked my local dealer if they could change mine, they said there was no way it could be done!

Completely and utterly wrong there gamichea.

You clearly don't remember one of VW's early magazine adverts for the new Passat, which featured someone pulling on a lead trying to get his dog out of the back of a shiny black estate car.

The punchline went something like, "It's so good you'll never get him out again".

If you pull it down hard enough, you should be able to do it rather artfully Like how I do - pull down in an arc and the hand moves naturally out of the way - Tragic? Yes

That definitely doesn't work and it's upset the fill to fill reading that I usually do - Bah!
