    Hi All

    New to the site.
I'm going to look at a few Passats. The model I am most interested in is the V5 2.3. More than likely a B5 model, around 2000/2001. Would prefer an automatic but if the right manual comes along I could easily be tempted

Are there any things I should look out for. I know the cars are very well made and will be going for one with full VW service history.
Any points I should make my mechanic aware of when we view the cars.

Looking forward to getting one and posting more here as I get used to it

    Hi,
Ive had a 2000 vr5 passat for about 18mths, and generally its been good. Damage to the rear axle caused the rear tyres to scrub out, easy enough to change but irritating. currently its off the road because of oil in the coolant ( oil cooler or head gasket ).
The biggest problem is finding information regarding the v5 engine, I hav`nt found any manuals as such or workshop cds. Forums like this one seem the best.

Seems mostly people go for the 1.8T or the 130 diesels doesn't it.

hi there.i've just bought a v5 (2000) auto and they are lovely cars.the only problem is that they are very heavy on fuel.i got 200 miles on a full tank locally, driving very carefully.ive been told there could be a fault but nobody seems to no what it is.

    200 miles on one tank?

I get around 360 with a manual saloon, somethings not quite right.
As for buying 18T or 130 diesels, Here,s somethng I read whilst looking for something else:

    Not sure of their sources.

    Thats terrible fuel consumption.
My Skyline gives me 200 to a tank!!

The people I have spoken to are all around the 350-400 mile to a tank area which really does suit my needs.

Nice link you posted, makes the V5 even more attractive

Only problems I seem to find is that of water leaking. I'll make sure to check under carpets and bonnet when I go looking.

    Nice one

I'm going to look at a few over the weekend.
I'm trying to find spec etc for the V5 SE on the web but ist proving difficult.

From reading here and associated links main problem they seem to have is the pollen filter leak issue.
