Have just taken delivery of a new 2008 2.0 tdi Highline 4 door saloon in Black. Have now covered 1000 miles and very disappointed with engine noise compared with previous model 1.9Tdi 130 on 03 plate. Didn`t test drive before purchase as I have driven VWs for 20 years.

How can you tell if its got the new Common Rail diesel? Thought CR was meant to be quiter than PD. ******* claims "Highline" 2.0Tdi only available with CR! I am not so sure.

I may be wrong here, but I think that if it's a 140bhp model on the PD the exhaust pipes tilt down slightly where they exit under the rear bumper, but the new CR 140bhp pipes stick straight out, similar to the 170bhp model.

I think you'll find it is a CR engine, my dealer advised me that only the cars in stock were PD and these were the ones that were on offer some months ago.

My 170 SEL was delivered about a month ago and is CR.

Hate to state the obvious but your dealer should be able to confirm this one way or the other.

I must admit this engine is more noisy than my previous BMW CR but not annoyingly so. I can accept the slight noise increase every time I fill up at the diesel pump

    Mine's a CDTi (140) & the pipes swoop down.
