Not trying to gloat, just answering the question from roonyb.

I know I'm lucky, and I don't take pleasure from others misfortunes, just letting people know that the DMF can take high mileages, however it seems to be the luck of the draw.

    Apologies for telling the truth.....

Mine,s a 51 reg A6 Avant pd 130 bhp with a 105k on the clock and i believe it,s just going ie:-clutch slipping.Spoke to a few garages which said you may be lucky and just be the clutch but i guess i will have to rely on there honesty to say whether on the way out or not but a big difference in price with a clutch just over £200 or a dual mass flywheel well over £500 but labour hours are so dear you may as well do it as it may go in few months/year anyway.Just trying to source a good garage now which will do the job if anyone has a recommendation in the south west could you please let me know located in Bristol thx!!

Mine is a 2002 GT TDI PD150. Just had a new clutch fitted due to oil contamination from leaking oil seal. It is a DMF, but clutch plate is bolted up so possible to change seperately if the flywheel is servicable, which mine was. Total cost to supply and fit genine VAG clutch kit including slave cylinder and oil seal was £330.

I have a gt td 130ps with a dms i was told by GSF that VW didn't start to fit DMS untill late 02 early 03,i sometimes hear what seems to be the release bearing rattling but its intermitant and i have been told if i replace the bearing it is wise to replace the clutch which i would get done anyway but does this mean the DMS would need replacing too ?

WORMHOLE. Clutch slip does not indicate DMF failure. However, the heat produced if the vehicle is driven for a long time with a slipping clutch can damage it, best to get it done sooner rather than later. LUK, who produce clutch and DMF's for the Audi/ VW range, now offer them in kit form, clutch and DMF together, to the aftermarket at a fraction of the price of the main dealers. Try 0117 9541424, might not be the cheapest but seem to turn out a good job.

There seems to be a lot of confusion as to when dmf's were fitted dazler1527 says there that GSF said they weren't fitted till late 02 but a couple of posts before JB1666 says his 1999 has a dmf. Also since originally starting this thread I don't think that failure of the dmf is as widespread as I was first led to believe. I've spoken to several owners of high mileage VW diesels who are still on their original clutch and dmf. One of these, the owner of a 2002 Passat pulls a heavy caravan and says he has had the clutch 'smokin' on numerous occasions and it has never given any problems. The internet is great for finding out about these things but is it a case of 'too much knowledge' ?

DMF’s were used on VAG products as far back as 1993 with the first AFN engine but we (in the UK) didn’t see them until the Golf 4 except on the 110PS Passat TDI. The first VW to have one that was common in the UK was the appalling 1995 Polo 1.9D and then the A4 TDI from 1996.

Problems with the DMF aren’t confined to VAG, I have seen the problem on other makes such as “The car of the Devil”. The DMF was designed by CFW for Porsche initially but taken mainstream by LUK and now made by Sachs and Valeo as well. That bloke honest John does seem to have a real problem with VAG, a good example of impartial journalism, not.

I don’t know what it is about VAG products but they do seem to attract very strong feelings, some people can be extremely partisan and defensive (like me) and those that don’t like the various brands can be quite venomous about them, it’s very odd.
