Recently bought a 9 month old Passat estate with the factory fitted mobile phone support, described as top of the range....etc. etc...

It seems that the number of phones it supports is very limited and the knowledge in the couple of dealers I have spoken to very poor.

Interested to know if anyone has heard of any software upgrades to enable other phones...or hints & tips on how to get the best out of it.

My current phone is a Nokia N70...which is not compatible!

I have also tried pairing up a Sony Ericsson, which is meant to work ...but with no success.

    Frustrated!!!

Sounds like it....I have picked up a Nokia 6230i which seems to work fine. Downloaded address book, set up voice tags....most functionality seems good....not sorted speed dial yet! Also need to get better with the famous 'keypad'

Sound like you sorted it now ? nokia have designed the phone kit for the passat , and up to now only found that nokia mobiles are the only ones with "sim access profile" needed to full use the hands free kit full. Have you brought the cradle to fit the phone in the arm rest yet ? , i also have a 240 volt inverter fitted in the arm rest . have u ?

It looks like you are having the smae problems as me.

You wish to update the telephone for new technology, but the lists and cradles availabe from VW are for phones up to 5 years old.

Why do we always ahve to do what they say.

Surely its about time they got their act into gear and kept up tp date with all technologies.

I'm in the middle of a dispute with VW UK tryng to get some details out of them to re-program the info and service buttons which do not work on O2. Their latest answer is that I should go through the phonebook on my mobile and delete the first zero out of any 0800 numbers. Aggghhh...how many times do I have to tell them that the the preprogrammed 0800 numbers are in the factory fitted phone preperation and not in my phone?

If you are looking for a list of phones compatible with the bluetooth preperation don't bother looking on the VW UK site, but try this one:
    http://www.zubehoer-service.de/news/...ang=en&mcarid=
It also list the item numbers for suitable cradles to use in the centre armrest and the recommended firmware versions on the mobiles. It is still out of date though as none of the Nokia N series mobiles are included which have been compatible for over 12 months, see http://press.nokia.com/PR/200602/1033826_5.html which specifically mentions the phones work with the Passat Bluetooth premium preperation.
I have also tried the O2 Jet https://shop.o2.co.uk/phone/O2/Jet which only costs £60 and supports SAP (sim access profile, not rSAP which is a VW made up term) and works with the factory installed premium installation. I suspect many other manufacturers mobiles also support SAP. I'll be trying various handsets over the next few months and will try and compile a list.

The links are very useful, but we still use the old fashioned way of phone in cradle and the cradle wired into the radio system.

As you mention the phone technology has moved on but VW has not in this field decided it necessary to update.

However, I understand from VW Customer services for what they are worth, the VW Germany are up dating the list of suitable phones to use, so may be that this will be both the fixed and Bluetooth options but we wont hold our breathe.

As you say the latest Nokia sets are in thier eyes not compatible. If we are not careful, we will be using the old heavy battery type and cradle again.

I am using a Nokia 6230i in a factory fitted dash cradle in the new Passat. The voice tag system will not work correctly. If you call a number using a tag it will dial the number, fire up the stereo/handsfree, but then after 2 seconds turns the stereo off. The call is still put through, but the handsfree is gone. The person at the other end can faintly hear you through the phone mic, but you can't hear them.

We have this in 2 vehicles witht he same phone. No help from VW or Nokia. Anybody else experience this?

I have successfully paired and used my Nokia 6280 with a premium install Passat. Downloaded all contacts etc. Have to confess I didn't have time to train the voice dialling, but everything else worked.

No idea on the charging cradle availability yet though.
