02 Plate TDI 130 - Cambelt

Hi - I had the cambelt changed on my Passat at 59k miles last August by an independent specialist. This I am told this included replacement tensioners and water pump. Last week, at 63k miles, the stud fastening the tensioner to the engine block failed causing nearly £2,500 worth of damage to the engine, warranting a replacement cylinder head. According to the specialist who fitted the cambelt (and is carrying out the repair) the kit supplied to replace the cambelt does not include a replacement stud. He also said that the stud on the Passat is 10mm in diameter reducing to 8mm which apparently used to be used on the Golf but for the has now replaced by a 10mm stud. Why has VW not done the same for the Passat? Is this just bad luck or was the original job suspect .

I can’t help feeling that I am being fed a line.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

as far as i can see, you paid this garage for a full belt, tensioner and pump change, nuts & bolts are not your concern. if the belt mechanism has failed, it is the garages responsibility to fix this FOC to you. check your warranty in regards to the timing belt replacement you had done, you should be covered, if in doubt contact your local citizens advice/trading standards and ask their advice.
