    Hi all,
new to this site, but already think it's sound.
Just wondering if anyone can help me out. Had some problems with my golf just recently, so took it to a vw specialist to get it sorted. Had new temp sender fitted and that seemed to sort it, car was running spot on. A week later everything went wrong and it started playing up again, it's worse than ever now. The temp gauge keeps going down and then back up, sometimes goes all way down to cold, and there is a serious loss of power. It seems to get worse over 3000revs and when you go over 50mph~(when it has good run), there is also a funny smell (like hot coolant). The engine doesn't sound right either, like it's trying too hard. Had computer plugged in and it can't read any faults.

    Has anyone got any ideas,

Please help as i will be bald soon.

    Thanks

ok, my first gem of advice LOL if you've replaced a part once already, why replace it again.. not a logic i follow. secondly, it may not be the temp sender, it could well be a thermostat. im not too sure where this is or how much/how hard they are to replace etc, but from what your describing, thats what it sounds like check your coolant level, check the radiator and hoses for leaks. if none of these seem to provide a problem, get it on a VAG com and check for codes, i would try to avoid just replacing parts blindly, i am almost certain youll find you just replaced that temp sender for no reason im afraid!

The garage said it could be another faulty sender and fitted 2nd one for free.

Had slight coolant loss, but can't find a leak.

did it not ring alarm bells that the first 'replacement' temp sender had gone faulty so soon? i would be questioning why this had happend, as for the coolant loss, perhaps looking for a leak may help?

i think youll find that without a proper description of the faults and getting the VAG com on it, ther isnt going to be a lot of advice offered

LOL, well way i see it, id rather get it on the good old vagcom (which i must add, is affordable wink wink) than simply replacing temp senders every weekend, garages annoy me when they do that, simply replacing parts blindly does not resolve the problem, obviously, if the problems still there, its %99 certain it aint the ruddy temp sender LOL so, techniker.... what would you suggest

I agree with you fully, garages of today are not up to the job.

There are certain cars that I know nothing about and if people ask me to take a look I have to turn them away. I am sorry but specialising and having the equipment & training to specialise with is the way forward.

Its very hard to build confidence in a customer now days and thats because too many people have lost hard earned cash paying garages who do not invest money & time in training their staff.

But that makes me very proud of what I have acheived with my business.

As for the car in question > Possible thermostat > I dont know what the fault description was, but if it was 'signal too low' then thermostat is the first check, after connections & wiring of course.
