the button for disc/changer, simply selects either the single cd loader (built in to the head unit) or the cd changer (if fitted). first of all, ensure the light is under the cd player, not the changer. could just be you have a fault unit. if so, IMO, i wouldnt bother getting a OEM unit, get a reasonable aftermarket, pioneer and alpine are probably the best bet. other than that, you'd probably be looking at around £100/150 for a cd & changer package from eBay.

. IMO, i wouldnt bother getting a OEM unit,..... WHAT'S THAT

M ,no, i have selected the head unit ok, i just though there was a hidden menu or something to get it going as i have searched previous treads here about coding,it has the old noika car kit as well.
    What's Gamma by the way.

If you want to keep all the lighting of the original radio (OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer, i.e. the factory fitted), then you can pick up a second hand original VW unit second-hand for £60-80 on eBay.
Although buy off a reputable seller, as there appears to be a number of duff units out there.

    John,
Sorry, I don't know the answer to that one. They are fairly uncomplicated units, so my guess is that it's faulty - but that is no more than a guess.

john, you got three options from what i can see

    1. repair the origional unit, in which case you will have to contact a car audio specialist

2.buy a 2nd hand OEM unit (VW original) as suggested

    3. buy an aftermarket unit (not VW original) and fit

i dont think there will be many people who can help you with the specific fault you describe, its more of an autoelectronic thing im afraid!
