loud clunky noise when shifting from 2 to 3rd gear

Does anyone know why my passat would occassionaly make a clunking noise when moving from 2nd to 3rd gear, i have just bought this car 2nd hand, and its only 1.5 years old, i would like to think that this is normal but its starting to irritate, shouldnt gear changing be smooth ? its a 2006 passat with 140bhp and 2.0 litre, could someone please point me in the right direction, as if there is problems with it id like to sort them before warranty runs out. thanks.

What kind of clunk? Is it audible or are you "feeling" it as well? Where in the car does the clunk come from? Does it happen every time or just sometimes?

it happens occassionally when i move from 2nd to 3rd gear, you can hear it and you can feel it through the gear stick.

I'd question the clutch first.

Alien, I have a similar or same problem, but have not considered it a problem.

I have found the clutch very heavy and probably once a week or so, from 2nd to 3rd, have experienced what I would call gearbox "shunt" as I let the clutch up.

I have always assumed that I have been a bit too hasty bringing up the clutch.

As is usual with these things, if you try and concentrate and make it happen, it doesn't!!

If it happens when you are being gentle with the clutch then I would question it.

No, not at all.

Fom my point of view, I guess the change fron 2nd to 3rd, is the most "sporty" of changes. I might be getting carried away with myself and being a bit quick off the clutch to accelerate hard. Can't speak for alienkidmj12.
