No idea what caused it. wouldn't go above 50mph, the clutch pedal dropped to the floor and wouldn't come up. Pulled over and started smoking. Popped bonnet and lots more smoke so put it back down and ran for the hills!

M5 was closed for a while as smoke was going across both carridgeways, and lane closures while it was recovered.

Got a call from the insurance company today, guess what... they're writing it off lol. They offered me £6000 which is what it was insured for (02 TDI 130 SE) so going to look at a similar spec black one on Sunday
Every cloud has a silver lining... was about to pay nearly £1k to get it serviced with cambelt, clutch and dual mass flywheel along with a long life service... I would have been p**sed if I'd done that then it happened!

No idea, possibly clutch, hydraulic fluid catching fire, glow plug issue, some random electrical problem? who knows. The insurance aren't going to spend time hunting around to find out as it would just cost them more before they wrote it off, so not worth the hassle.

You didn't have the uprated brake kit on it yet did you?

The "4 rings" doesn't suit the charcoal look!

Thankfully no the brembos, disks and 17" alloys with nearly new tyres were supposed to go on that weekend, but I didn't get chance... now that would have annoyed me even more than when I called the insurance company and they said "Sorry, you're only covered 3rd Party" My certificate said fully comp, I paid fully comp. By that point I was ready to kill someone!
Thank God it was just a computer error between broker and insurer! but as it was a Saturday, the brokers were shut so I was stranded 130 miles from home with no way of getting back with me and Dave (the dog)

If i heard that whilst being stood on the hard shoulder of the M5, watching my pride and joy go up in smoke.... i think i'd of headed for the fast lane.

As you say, it could've been a lot worse. You'll have to post some pic's of your new car as and when you get 1.

    Good luck

That looks bad, though it seems the it all ends reasonably well. Glad the insurance glitch was sorted out, though it sounds like you was inconvenienced a little.
