I have spent sometime today reading various threads re A4 Multitronic problems. Where as I think my problems are the same as everyone elses with the only difference that my car has a low mileage of 7k, hence having no Service as yet.

I have noticed over the past 6 weeks a couple of things are re-occuring:
    • Reversing off my drive (slight slope) no such power and I need to give the car some revs to get it to move.
    • Pulling up at a junction, lights etc (in Drive or Sports) the rev counter will go up and want to go forward
    • A very embarassing couple of times in the past 2 weeks where I have pulled up and stopped at a roundabout (whilst in Drive) and then foot on the accelerator to go but it won't go anywhere! I have had to place it in first gear for it to move on.
I am hoping that someone can give me some guidance/diagnosis as the car is now out of warranty.

    Cheers

Hello and welcome to the stressful world of multitronics!!!!

7K is nothing - I thought I had the lowest mileage car with a problem at 31500 miles (when it started/ I purchased - suppose it could have been going on longer - why did it get sold by previous owner?).

There are similar stories over on the A6 board as well - in case you haven't read enough on here!

Take it back to Audi - they are not being honest with us about this problem but they do try to give a percentage off of the bill depending on age/mileage. With 7K on the clock - they should be VERY helpful, it's hardly moved off the forecourt.

It will be interesting to hear how things go - please keep us posted.

    Hi Max
    Thanks for you reply!
The only registered owner was Audi Manchester. I purchased it from ICS in Chorley where they had purchased the car from an auction in Leeds. My concern is that the warranty expired September of last year. (2007) Would they still assist? (cost)

I can't say what Audi would do - what I do know is that if you read through other peoples sagas, Audi have been (I can't say completely helpful in solving the problem - as they refuse to acknowledge that it is a REAL problem with THEIR gearbox design) giving a percentage off.

In my case I had a 53 reg A4 with about 34,000 on it - purchased from a non-Audi dealer. Audi diagnosed a fault and off their own back (I thought my car had a one-off problem at the time) offered a 50% discount for goodwill. (other half paid for by the dealer we bought from). About £1200 in total.

When this modification (7-plate-clutch-conversion) didn't work, they paid 90% of the next bill. About £1500.

Other posters have had similar discounts.

It may be worth having a chat with your local dealer - they will need the car to diagnose any problem. But a car with 7K on it should NOT be going wrong.

Update! I have spoken to Audi Manchester this morning. I explained the problems I have been experiencing and they admitted that they have had a fair few through their door. They have asked me to bring the car in for diagnosis so they can establish the problem which I will have to pay for - £94+Vat per hour! Hopring to get my car in over the next week. Will let you know how I get on.

    hi Hilly,

In my case the car was 6 mths out of 3 yr warrenty, Audi recommended and fitted a new gear box. Both Germany & UK Audi contributed 80% to total repair bill, this took a week. Car had approx 27k on it at the time. Let dealer do the phoning round and get contributions and then phone Audi UK customer services yourself, they may give a little more on the contribution. Audi should not expect a car with only 7k on it to require a new gearbox / gearbox fix

    good luck

    cheers

Thanks Glove, your story has given my more hope! I asked them what the worst case scenario would be and it would be to replace the gear box costing between 4-5k. My car is 5 months out of the 3 year warranty so similar story to yours. Like you said with the mileage being only 7k you would think it wouldn't need this doing to it. Hopefully it will not require a new gearbox. It is booked in for next week. I will see what the diagnosis is and what contribution they are willing to give. If it ain't good I will be on to Audi UK Customer Services straight away.

    Further update....
I had my car in for a diagnosis Feb 08 at Audi Manchester. Unfortunately they couldn't find any problem Paid for the hours diagnosis (reduced from 2 hours after haggling) and was told to keep an eye on it and if the problem became worse to bring the car back in. Got to the end of April 08 and then it became apparent that the car would no longer change gear in automatic and I had to depress the accelerator to get the gear change. Also on the odd occasion there was also no power in reverse. Spoke to Audio Manchester and they booked the car in for 2 days from 13 May 08 as I informed them that the problems tended to occur more from start up/cold and also on short journeys. I had had my worse nightmare confirmed yesterday that it needs a new gearbox Manchester Audi said they would contact Audi UK and submit a claim for a gesture of goodwill payment (car is out of warranty) I have had a call back from Audi Manchester today to say Audi UK will not contribute anything to the repair as I didn't purchase it from the network The reason why I hadn't bought it from the network was that it was a 54 reg and it was the old model and Audi manchester confirmed that they would not sell it on their forecourt because of this hence it went to another garage why I purchased it from. Audi Manchester have suggested that I need to speak to Audi UK to see if I can anything from them. I need to know if anyone has been in the same situation so when I contact them I can provide proof that they have contributed to other cars that have been not purchased from within the network. Another annoying thing is that as they are giving gesture of goodwill payments so they are aware of the problem. Why did they never do a recall on these vehicles to have them checked out?? Any help and assistance would be very much appreciated as I haven't £5k to pay for a new gear box. Thankyou
