I HAVE GOT A PROBLEM WITH MY 2001 TDI PASSAT SPORT,THE DRIVERS FRONT WINDOW WILL NOT GO UP OR DOWN,AND IS MAKING PROPER NASTY NOISES ,THE MOTOR SEEMS TO BE WORKING BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE A CABLE HAS SNAPPED OR COME A DRIFT ANY IDEAS ?.

Don't know about the mechanism on a Passat. But had a similar problem on a MKIII Golf. The drivers window got smashed & the radio nicked. The glass got in to the mechanism and frayed the cable. It worked for a while after the glass got replaced but then struggled to go up and down and made a hell of a noise. I replaced the mechanism myself. I don't know how much of a DIY'er you are. You could remove the trim and have a look. I could see where the cable was damaged on the Golf.

This is a bit vauge but I read somewhere that mk4 golfs have a habbit of breaking a plastic part in the mechanism, It may be the same for the passat. Suggest you do a search to see if other have had a similar problems. I recall that the part was not too expensive.

Give the local dealer partd dept a ring, they are pretty good at identifying common faults.

THE CABLE HAD COME OFF ITS RUNNER 30 MINUTE JOB. REGARDS GARY

Great I like the inexpensive jobs, just good to know the out come when people are searching for fixes.
