    Well hello everyone,

Im new to this forum and im close to crying my eyes out,
I own a Silver Golf STDi on which i have changed the wheels from 15" to 18".
Today (Sunday 8th May 2008) i was suppose to make a trip to manchester (using m25 via Kingston). About 2 or 3 miles at around 75mph onto the motorway, my engine made a weird noise, felt like it was accelerating by itself for a few seconds, then started julking with a massive black cloud behind me, suddenly my dash board become a night club with all the possible lights effect you could imagine, the oil, water, temperature and stop warning signs all went on so i managed to pull on the hard shoulder (from the fast lane), This happened so fast that i am still finiding it hard to believe i am still alive. once stopped the engine started smoking no to much so i opened the bonnet just to prevent the engine from catching fire. I was just standing in front of the car and before i realized i was stpping in a big puddle of oil (see picture DSC00038.JPG from http://patelio.co.uk/dw1), when the recovery guy came over to put the car on the van, water started to drip out. At first i thought it could have been the cam belt but the recovery man said to me that if it was the cam belt the pistons would have nearly popped out of the bonnet. The car is now at the garage and i have to wait a few days to find out what caused this and what the damage is. My car is like my little baby and i am so anxious at the moment, does anyone have an idea what this could be and how much it would roughly cost

The bits above sound like a good clue as to whats possibly happend, your description is an engine sucking up engine oil and running on it, then hydraulic action taking place causing sever engine damage

I went to see my garage a couple of days ago and they were able to have a look at the car straight away for me, they lifted the car and removed the cover below the engine to find a huge hole in the bottom engine block caused by a piston rod that snapped, the guy looked stunned for a few seconds, he had to call 3 of his colleague to get their opinion and make sure he was not wrong. Damage of this is that i need a new bottom block costing £1300 new or i could buy a second hand engine (top and bottom) for about £1000 + £650 in labour. This is killing me!!!!!! i really dont know what to do.

sorry to hear that. you should try and get the parts from a scrapyard as cheap as possible and then look around for a mechanic that will carry out the required labour as cheap as possible.

Where does the Labour charge come into this ? Its a huge bill if its just for putting a secondhand engine in
