Hi, car is an R plate 110 tdi.
I appreciate a £250 tuning box would be a safe option, but this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=290219130669
Looks to do same job, and wary as I am of all things ebay, feedback suggests is worth a punt.
Anyone have one, or any thoughts on it?
If not, anyone recommend an alternative, and possibly a fmic for it, I've searched and searched with no luck at all.
    Thanks, Justin.

as i used to work in electronics it looks a bit simple and as if the high buy it now price for a device that is not a chip, i think you are paying for the plugs and cables and a box that just has a variable resistor in it, i would steer clear, cheap mods are never good mods.

i have seen hundreds of simliar items with the vag plugs on and dont think they are much more than the £2.50 mod chip.

go for a remap, im going to, im not the wealthiest bloke but have managed to save the cash to have mine done, it'll be worth it from a reputable company.

has your car not got a fmic anyway? mine is in the front bumper at the right as you look at it, with air going through it from the bumper vent

So anything of this type isn't that good?
Just seeing them like this: http://www.tdi-tuning.co.uk/store/in...d&productId=75
For £250 or more, you think they're all basically the same?
I was thinking they were a plug in chip sort of affair, presumably where these are OBD2 and require a remap and not a chip swap.

Just seen threads where a larger IC gave good results, but can't find them anywhere!

Is brothers car actually, he wants to perk it up a bit.
Took it out last night and averaged 74.5 according to the trip computer lol!

    Thanks for your reply.

If you are buying a tuning box, is is economical to buy a 'used' box from a respected manufacturer.

There are many on German ebay (less so on UK ebay).

I used to buy 8 & 10pin VP37 tuning boxes regularly from German ebay, and never payed more than £8. (payment was often the most difficult part)

Fitting a larger intercooler will not really increase power.

On a 110bhp VE engine, unless you are prepared to spend serious money, i would use a tuning box coupled with a MAP mod to increase boost pressure a few psi, with ideally a slightly better turbo for longevity (GT1749VA).

A good tuning box alone will destroy your clutch, if abused.

Must agree, a variable resistor is most likley, you can get a fixed one for £19 and throw it away much quicker as you will not mess around with the adjustment, dont even think of getting one! A re-map is the way to go.

So what would you be getting for your £250+ of tuning box, basically a resistor too?
Are these a crude way of just upping boost and fuel, like you would manually on an old diesel?
    All new to diesel me.....!

Most of the circuitry in a tuning box is there so that everything appears normal during the pre ignition tests.

It is fooling the car into providing more fuel (without the ECU knowing) and due to this, a little more boost.

It is not as complete a solution as a remap, but on a VE engine 145bhp from a tuning box feels pretty similar to 145bhp from a remap.

I would not consider buying one at full price.

Well if that's the case it needs to be cheap and cheerful if that's all they do!
Will have a word with my mate about remapping it then.
Thanks - sounds like the resistor mod on petrol cars, only a bit more effective....
