Engine Knocking/tapping sound

I have a 2001 A4 2.4. started it this morning and herad a slight knocking/tapping noise from the engine. It increased when i increased the revs. No problem before, no warning lights on, running very smoothly ....apart from the new sound! any ideas what this could be?

where is the noise comming from? the top end or bottom?does the noise happen only under load or all the time?is it a tapping or knocking,the noises are different?

Ok,

Had a listen properly last night, and its a slight knocking noise in the top end of the engine. It is coming from the passenger side. Its seems to be only 1 cylinder playing up. The noise is constant.

You might consider having a check of camshaft/tappets/rockers/springs/movement of in/ex valves

If yes, make sure to check also the thrust discs between the rocker and valve spindles
