I can live with paying tax on fuel, but paying tax on tax is idiotic.

There's a stat I heard today, for every £50 you spend at the pump, you get £17 worth of petrol. The rest is the Government's fuel tax, and VAT.

I tried to get people to sign this a coupla weeks ago in the "Say no to overpriced fuel!" thread started by omegadirective which was received with much apathy & defeatism to the point where Kimandsally quit the forum!!! We all know this isn't cause a revolution, but as I said before if nobody says or does anything then its a given that nothing will happen. We can but try.
It's common sense that if tax is cut on fuel it will have to be raised elsewhere, but a more even spread would be much fairer in my mind. I'm lucky enough to work only about 4 miles from home as from late last year, before that I had a 40 mile round trip. I'd now be feeling a pretty big pinch just from getting to work & back.
Public transport's way overpriced too, the 40 mile round trip used to cost more on the train than driving (in a 2.6!!), thanks to the Tories for privatising the rail & bus network. Even they admit that was a mistake now! Don't have a short memory, yes Labour have cocked some stuff up & their fuel tax policy is ludicrous, but does anyone really want a return to Thatcherite greed-pigs slasing tax & letting services slowly fall apart which in turn makes society slowly fall apart?
It's a sad day for democracy where the main political parties all try to look remarkably similar & 'centre' but are all equally unappealing for one reason or another, it's very easy to be apathetic.
If people can't be bothered voicing their opinions then politicians do as they please & those politicians that actually do care don't even know what's bugging those who can' be bothered telling them.
Rant over & soap box stashed away. At least I'm trying.

    apathy & defeatism

I can see how it would look like that but from my perspective it was more resignation than anything else. As for 1980’s greed is good, well this is the noughties and most of the fuel price problem is due to speculator greed.

I agree wholeheartedly! The 'credit crunch' is also down to market driven gluttony. These are the problems that occur when markets & economies are left completely to their own devices. I'm not preaching Soviet style planned economies or anything but this is a prime example of what I was saying in my previous thread of being wary of turning to the Conservatives for the answer! The major economic problems with the UK economy aren't directly the fault of this government.
But that still doesn't detract from the fact that their fuel tax policy is still in dire need of re-assessment.
If the Thatcher government hadn't have sold off the north sea oil fields then maybe the government would be able to do something about it!
Very simply public transport & the utilities should never have been privatised and been left open to the volatility of market forces. Shareholders & market players give much less of a 5h1t about the hardships caused by soaring prices than politicians!
