My 2001 Passat 130 (102000 miles) has been experiencing problems losing turbo boost pressure and going into 'limp home' mode. I replaced the MAF sensor but had no change so rather than going down the route of changing all the sensors I took the car to a VW specialist for diagnostics. Basically I have been advised due to carbon build up in the Turbo the wastegate is sticking causing the Turbo to overboost etc etc..... therefore and the Turbo will require overhauling. The process for this activity will involve taking the Turbo off and sending it off for to a specialist who will survey and advise what work will be required. If its just a case that the Turbo just needs cleaning uo then I am advised that the costs for this activity are likely to be around £200 however if repair of the turbo is required then it is likely to be around £400.

Now my query is that when I have rang up various companies that provide Garret approved reconditioned turbo for Passats the costs for these are around £550. Whereas the I am being quoted £200 or £400.

What are other peoples experiences with this problem, should I go with a Garret approved reconditioned Turbo or my VW specialiat with the cheaper option. In the long run I intend to keep the car so I don't want to be repeating the job in a couple of years.

    Thanks

    James

I suggest getting to someone who has a vag-com and can scan the car for you, because with vag-com , one could activate the VNT mechanism and the EGR valve on and off for unlimited time, and you could see if its sticky. To clean the turbocharger i sugest to search the "how to..." on www.tdiclub.com as they have a good video of what's involved. You you are not good with the spanners, get a fully reconditioned turbocharger as its a better option in the long run but, get a second diagnostic from a vw specialist as they are few things that might give the said symptoms !
