    Hi,
i've got a 2000 X plate gti 1.8t 150bhp with 110k on the clock. it's been really reliable for 4 years but recently has problems starting: basically -

    • sometimes (prob 70% of the time) it starts fine, like new, no accelerator needed to start
    • other times, it will take 5-10 seconds to start, and only if i pump the accelerator pedal hard. In these cases, when it starts the engine seems to vibrate a lot and some dark smoke comes out of the exhaust temporarily, then it;s ok
    • sometimes when it is idleing after starting the engine, it will idle at around 2500 revs, rather than usually just under 1000.
    • it doesn't seem to make any difference whether the engine is hot or cold. if anything, it normally starts fine, first time each morning. then when i restart it during the day i have the problems.
any thoughts? all ideas appreciated and anything that i could try myself rather than having to take to a mechanic would be great.

    thanks in advance
    John

You need a fault code read and that will more than likely show you have a faulty coolant temperature sender.
