Was thinking about replacing the door speakers in our Passat.
Anyone know what size they are?

My Haynes manual says they are rivited into the door. Is that true for all Passats? It also says that the tweeters are "permanently attached" to the internal triangluar plastic mirror cover. Can not be removed at all?

    Any advice welcome!
    Thanks

I have a '97 Passat TDi saloon and I made the mistake of trying to prize off the speaker grille on the inside of the door! Don't do that, the only way to get them out properly with no bodging is to remove the inside door panel which is quite simple (refere to your haynes manual) The speakers are held in with 3 screws as far as I can recall, very simple to unplug and remove. I removed the door panel to replace what I thought was a faulty speaker, but it wasn't even plugged in! I'm not sure about the rear ones, I assume they're the same. I'm sure the tweaters could be removed if necessary but I've not ventured that far yet! Hope this helps!

if you are replaceing them they are 16.5 or 17cm....you will also need speaker adaptor rings from somewhere like AUTOLEADS

    Hi,

The above info is well appreciated.

I have recently purchased a passat 1.9 tdi and found that I only have 1 door speaker and 2 tweeters in the car!
Can anyone tell me what type of speakers are ideal for both front and back doors ie component, standard speakers etc etc. I'm concerned about the size in terms of obstruction to the windows and power compatibility to factory unit

    Kindest regards
    Jum

I replaced the line fit units in my Passat with 165mm component speakers from DLS in the front and 165mm co-axial Missions in the rear.

I used spacers that can be bought from any car audio shop and there were no problems with clearance despite the chunky magnets.

The front door has a small plastic quadrant where the factory tweeter goes - I ordered a couple of replacement units [£6 each] and cut out the plastic grille part and pushed the DLS tweeters through until the integral grille was flush with the front. I used a glue gun at the back to secure new tweeter in place.

The DLS have a passive crossover which I found room to mount on the aluminium panel behind the door card with self tappers. Obviously, the bass unit and tweeter need seperate wires from the crossover...

Virtually all head units are designed to drive 4ohm speakers, so this shouldn't be a problem, but better quality speakers tend to be less efficient, so you might loose a small amount of volume.

My Passat came with the naff Gamma head unit, so this was replaced with an Alpine; there was no need for any additional amplification...

    Cheers

    Guy, Nice 1 dude!

Well impressed with your solution for the tweeters. May do that myself.
Also am glad to hear that clearance won't be a problem.

I have a meager budget of about £100- £120 for all 4 or 6 speakers. Any ideas where i can shop and what would be good for that price? What would you buy given the budget?

Unfortunately, i've never exposed myself to car audio bits and bobs and to say that i'd know what i'm talking about when purchasing, I would be over zealous!

Again, thank you for your help and kindest regards....

    Just to add...

I've replaced my fronts only with some 17cm components with a separate crossover box. There is loads of room behind the door card for a crossover so don't be put off about getting a set. The tweeters can be a fiddle as they are obviously located in the wing mirror internal covers, but nothing a bit of plastic butchery and a hot melt glue gun won't sort out.

    Also the ring adaptors;

Make sure you get the wiring loom adaptors so that it a plug and play afair rather than having to cut the factory loom. Got mine off e-bay with the looms for reasonable money.

    Good luck.

Oh... the factory speakers by the way are quite good. In my laziness when I had my Golf, I installed all my kit (3x600w amps, sub etc etc) and left the stock speakers for another day to do. I never did change them as they were really very good and could easily handle the power.

Unfortunately when I got my Passat, the passenger front was already blown probably as a result of being overdriven with a 'dirty' signal from the Gamma. I was therefore forced to change them. But if they were intact I would have played the same trick as I did in the Golf and left them alone but would have amped them with a nice clean signal.

If it were me with this budget, I'd replace the front speakers with a decent commonent set and save up to replace the back ones later.

My choice would be the R6A's from DLS, Genesis Profile 16's or Punch P162S from Rockford Fosgate. Any of these will set you back £120-£150, but you will need to shop around.

Once you hear the difference between the front and rears, you will find the dosh to upgrade the rears; and these aren't as critical, so you could get away with some cheaper coaxials.

If you really don't want to spend any more than this in total, have a look at Alpine SPS171A components for the front and Alpine SPS-17C2 co-axials for the rear. These are £87 and £35 respectively.

I don't normally rate speakers from electronics manufacturers much, but the Alpines are relaible and cheap.

I will try and post a pic of the tweeters in situ later. I will also be installing the Genesis components into my missus's Octavia soon and will post some pics of the process.

    Cheers
