A few days ago my Mk4 GT TDi 130 starting to make squeak on start up and was generally noisier than normal. Today started the car and engine ran quietly but no PAS and battery light on dash. Turns out the pulley wheel on the alternator shaft had come off.

Do I need a new alternator or is it possible to replace the wheel only? The shaft is slightly tapered and it looks as though the pulley wheel simply fits over the shaft. There appears to be a rubber lining to the inside of the pulley wheel. This looks to have cracked and perished leading to it falling off. But what else holds the wheel on to the shaft?

    Thanks

TDI's are fitted with a free Wheeling pulley to help damper the v-belt, as long as the alternator isn't damaged the free wheel pulley can be replaced with the right tool. it's common for the pulley to lock up/break over time due to wear and tear I've replaced a few.

    Thanks for the info.

I'm going to go for a new alternator as local VW dealer can't guarantee that the pulley wheel will fit the alternator shaft on my car.

Out of interest, what type of tool is required - a type of special socket or something else,
