I have had a GTi 1.8T 150bhp, a 4 Motion and now got a GTi 1.8T 180bhp. When I had my 4 Motion is was nothing but trouble. The fans failed on it twice and it had a creak that just wouldn't go away. I had roll bars, bushes, wishbones but still it was there. In the end I got rid of it for a E46 BMW after only 4 months.

The engine noise is very nice on them though and of course the traction from the 4 wheel drive. However, I never got more the 24mpg, and in the current climate of fuel prices I would go for a nice spec GTi instead. A 180bhp model if you can stretch to it as you will get the same brakes as on the 4 Motion, and the 6 speed gear box. I have had my GTi since January (a 180bhp), and it averages 31mpg. On a run it will get to 40 mpg. Not bad for the performance.

Performance between the two is marginal, as the 4 Motion is so much heavier. I would say the GTi (both versions) feel quicker in real world driving.

This is just my experience of owning both cars. Good luck with your search!

You can get GTi's with or without a turbo in 1.8s or 2L engines. The 4motion is a 2.8 and includes 4 wheel drive. Need I answer which is quicker?
    Its all about the balance....

i just been looking at the tax for a 4motion, i nearly fell off my chair, way to much for the year in 2010, £455.00,

have a look here and you can see what your car will cost you under the new taxing rules,

Hello, I have a 1999 2.0 gti, it is nice, comfortable, and a ride. It may not be as fast as 1.8 turbos, and 4motions, etc, but I like it for the moment

Did I mention Im selling it?????

Yeah cos it isn't the 4Motion!!! The 4Mo may have more power, but its very heavy and that 4 wheel drive system slows it down.

My 180bhp 1.8T is quicker than a 4Mo and a hell of a lot better on fuel

1.8t is no way as fast as a 4motion, i have had a 4motion for about 18months and it is an awesome car, it is so quick it sticks to the road like glue and if you get one that was regestered before 1-3-2001 you do not fall in to the new taxing laws, i get 28MPG and that is not motorway driving, my mate has the venom VR6 turbo mk3 golf, and i am faster off the lights then him and faster up hills, it does cost a bit more to run than the standard golfs such as the 1.8t and other Gti's but thay are so common, you always get jealous looks from the gti owners,
    i would go for one.

Will have to agree to disagree on this one!! Don't get me wrong the 4Motion is a nice car and they sound gorgeous.
