    Hello and thanks for looking.
I have just bought a mk3 N-reg 2.0 golf GTi 16v. It seemed to run ok but had a slight misfire, now the misfire has got worse and is realy bad after reving the engine. It starts and idles ok but when I drop the cluch after reving it misses and stalls. This now happens all the time even when changing gear the engine stalls.
I have changed the plugs, leads, airfilter & fuel filter.
Please help as I am starting to thing this was a real bad buy!
    Phil

Change the ECU relay first, at position 3 on the fuse box with “30” printed on top. It is available from VW under part number 165 906 381 for about £12. If that fails to cure it, have a fault code read done.

Thanks a lot mate, I will try this as soon as I can pick that part up. I can live with an extra 12quid to fix.

If that doesnt work, the next popular is the fuel pump relay (167).

Does the car start straight back up?

Yes it starts up ok straight after. I can hear a misfire right through the revs that seems to get worse once warmed up. Car will idle ok (with a slight mis) until I rev the engine over 2000rpm, then as the rpm drops it misses and pops and the revs just seem to drop off.
Its almost like its getting too much fuel or the fuel isnt cutting off after high rpm and its flooding the plugs?

Do these go quite often? What about the inlet manifold, would this cause this problem?

They are quite common apparently. I read somewhere else today that if you car struggles after dipping the clutch, that it could be a dirty throttle body.

Just been looking at that today, it dosen't look to dirty. Plus I dont think that would make it misfire right through the rpm range? I'm going to clean it a bit anyhow and try to chech the inlet manifold. then I'll phone VW and order the relays posted on here.

I wish you luck with your problem. Mine is going back to the auto electricion tomorrow. It runs for ten mins and then will cut out. It then shows no spark to plugs. I have just changed the HT leads, distributor cap and rotor arm and the ignition coil. Its very annoying
