Advice on a few problems to sort on 53 1.9 TDi [6] Avant Please!

Morning all,

Just collected my Avant yesterday. It's driving fine (Swindon to Cumbria in awful weather and averaging 54 mpg) and is in pretty good order but there are a few things I need to sort and I'd be glad of some advice please. I couldn't find much on the forums by searching. Thanks in advance.

1. On the aircon, the "Economy" light won't go out when you press the button. When the system is starting up the light isn't on but comes on after a few seconds and won't go out. It's working fine apart from that; hot is hot, cold is cold and the vents all work. I read that it may be a valve under the bonnet or just need re-gassing. What do people think?

2. There's no sound from the rear speakers. When you turn the fader on the "Concert" stereo all the way to the rear there is no sound at all! There is a subwoofer in the boot, and although I haven't had the rear doors apart I assume there are speakers in there too. It's a UK model. Anyone have any advice please?

3. Is there meant to be a cover on the rear centre ashtray behind where the armrest would be attached? It looks to me that there ought to be. Is it an easy job to fit one?

1.) The ECON light should go out when you press AUTO on either side of the unit. If it doesn't then there's something wrong with the air con. I suggest getting the fault codes read at a dealer to determine the exact cause. It could just be in need of regassing.

2.) Could be anything from missing speakers to broken wires or a faulty headunit

3.) Yes, the rear ashtray should have fold open lid.

I had a look behind the ashtray and the lid was inside..

I'll have to book into our local independent garage and get them to sort the air con.

I want an iPod interface so I'll get an auto electrician to sort out the speakers at the same time!
