    Hello all

    2002 B6 1.9 tdi Sport

My ESP and ABS lights came on, and the ******* said there was a fault with the steering angle sensor. I bought VAG-COM and a cable, replaced the sensor and reset the steering centre position following instructions posted here.

Unfortunately the warning lights persist and I'm now seeing some weird behaviour on VAG-COM.

Today, when I go into the ABS module I get a fault code "Sensor for steering angle, supply voltage terminal 30 " which won't clear.

I then went into meas block group 5 and in field 1 the correct steering angle is being reported and it changes in real time when the wheel is turned. However the rotation rate (with the wheel stationary) fluctuates between 0 and 1.5 degs/sec, the brake pressure between 0.65 and 1.3 bar and the transverse acceleration is reported as 0 to 0.9 m/s/s

When I go back to the fault codes screen there are none shown!!

When I leave the ABS module and then re-enter it I hear three beeps from the car, and a fault is showing "system function test activated" This code WILL clear.

When I exit the ABS module I hear a click from under the bonnet.

Can any experts shed any light on this strange stuff????

Any advice gratefully received, acted on and reported back here.

OK thanks I'll check it out tomorrow. What are you suspecting? Dodgy contact, loose fuse, blown fuse?

I'm sure you've seen this, but when you do the steering angle calibration you need to have the engine running before you move the wheel through its turns. A couple of the guides online don't mention the engine running part!!

Check for dodgy contacts throughout, it's obviously getting power as it's recording angles and allowing access to it, a good check for something obvious I'm afraid!!

Let us know how you get on

Have you checked the steering column electronics control unit for fault codes.I take it the fault was not there before you replaced the steering angle sensor?the pins are very thin and easy damaged.

Which part did you replace? Was it the Steering control module "8E0 953 549 x" or was it the slip ring?

Hi - I think I have the same problem as you. How easy is it to replace the sensor? How much was the part?

Have you got to the bottom of the problem yet?

    Ta.

No, I haven't solved the problem. It's going in to the dealer soon. If they find the original steering angle sensor was not faulty, and the fault actually lies elsewhere, I hope they'll refund the cost of the sensor.

The part is £160 and is easy to fit, although you'll need to search this and other Audi forums to find out how to remove the column shroud and steering wheel. Get the Haynes manual for the B6, as it is now available.

The part just clips off and on again, but be careful, the clips are fragile. You'll need a working copy of VAG COM and a cable to reset the straight ahead position once the new part is in place. But beware, replacing the part did not solve my problem!

Very strange. My ABS warning light came on this morning as well as the ESP, then ABS went off when I restarted the engine and stayed off for 25 miles into work (ESP light still on). Then this evening when I came drive home ABS came on when I started the car and stayed on. Then when I got in the car 30 mins later it didn't come on at all. ESP light is now permanently on though. Plan to hold off buying anything until I'm sure what the fault is. Looks like it could be similar to yours...

Took the steering angle sensor off and cleaned the optics and put WD40 on the contacts. Thoughts I'd solved it as light went off when I took it for a test drive but then came on again after about 5 mins. Looks like either the sensor is toast or the problem is elsewhere. Have attached some useful info here incase anyone else has the same issue.

    Instructions on removing sensor:

Note: Its not stated in here but you need the following tools:

    Dash insert 8mm bolts
For the steering wheel you can use a big torx driver to get the steering wheel off. And the long Torx 8 to get the cowling off - probably have to make your own as I couldn't buy one - thanks to nickynibbles for that tip.
