Well, I've taken the plunge and bought me a new stereo:

I just need to fit it now with all this lot.....

    And more

Here's hoping the Clarion Can-Bus adapter works....

Looks nice and looks like it will fit in with the passat interior with the blue display. Does it have ipod control/display?
I bet it will be a doddle to fit, worst bit is getting the trim off!

Yep, apparently you can have up to 256 different colour combinations and it has a USB slot so you can either plug in any USB device or an iPod cable - I'm going to have to ferret about to see if I've got a USB extension type cable so I can interchange between iPod and a USB device.

I've had the trim off about a thousand times so that won't be a problem - the problem's going to be fitting the cage for the stereo... Any advice anyone !?!?!

Hi James, I've pm'd you but thought I'd post what I did.

Below is a copy of the cage from my stereo's manual. You will see on it that there are small tabs that you need to bend over the facia adapter

This only gives you a fixing at the front and unles you use the metal strap as shown in the diagram (not supplied with my stereo) there will be some movement of the stereo. There is a gap (on mine) of approximately 1cm which I packed out with some plastic blocks which were left over from some flat pack assembly I never completed. As below

I screwed these on with some small self tappers which didn't interfer with the sliding in and out of the stereo. It fits quite snug now with no movement.

I have developed a slight creeking from the plastic dashboard surround. Nothing to do with the stereo as thats in fairly tight. Did I see a remedy for this somewhere?

By the way there are loads of wires now the can-bus adapter is fitted which have to be pushed deep inside the dashboard to get the stereo in.

Post some pics when its in.

    Cheers

    Neil

Try using a dry PTFE spray.

    Thanks Quatrelle,

Do you know if that is readily available off the shelf, or is it specialist supply?

Mine's made by the French branch of the '3-in-1' company (I'm sure you've seen their little tins of sewing machine oil) and was bought locally in a diy supermarket, so hopefully the same in the UK.

    All fitted:

    Before:

Hmm, I've got to fit all this lot...

    What a mess.....

    It Works!!

And it fits... I didn't use/need the cage - not sure how I would have fit it anyway

    The end result

It plays and controls my ipod brilliantly, it'll scroll through and pick through the menu and actually show text properly - far better than an OEM one ever could. It took me about an hour an a half to fit, but only because of the fact that I read the instructions and because of the bloody mess the ICE people made when they fitted my Parrot kit.

Note that where it says "If you have a VW, change this fuse"... Don't - it won't work if you do.

Forgot to add, I got this and all the bits from http://www.caraudiogiant.co.uk/ who have been brilliant, I can't recommend these enough as I've phoned/mailed them loads and they've pretty much bent over backwards to help me

PS, I seem to have a Fakra aerial adapter spare now if anyone wants it one the cheap?
