Hi, I have a 2001 130TDI Sport and am getting approx 50 mpg at 65mph on a motorway journey. (Using Cruise)

I see about 40mpg when cruising gently around locally...

I was hoping to get 60mpg but that would mean 50ish mph on the motorway which in my opinion would be impractical and dangerous!

    Cheers,

    Steve.

My 2.3 VR5 Petrol will do over 40mpg on a run if I'm careful so I'd say something is def wrong. (I do drive like a granny now, but I reckon 42.3 from London up to Stamford from the V5 aint bad )

Just for comparison. The RM do not let you use your own car if you travel more than 30mile whilst on duty, they give you a hire car instead. They gave me a Focus 1.6 automatic !! hire car this time. It averaged 35.9mpg from Plymouth to Rugby and back. £70 of fuel for 427 miles how **** is that.

Not a view shared by the "look how safely I'm driving" brigade, they really can't see that they're more of a hazard doing 50 than they would be at 70-80

I've just fitted cruise control and managed 53mpg on a trip to London last week, which included driving at a steady 80mph down the M1.

My MPG was not too good over the winter - apparently attributed to 'winter diesel' - plus the fact that my coolant temp sender was duff.

Having the replaced the sender, MPG improved.

feeling a bit disillusioned was looking at buying a passat or an A4 as my 91 golf gti is only returning about 30mpg.up until about 7 years ago i had an Audi 80 tdi and no matter where or how it was driven it would return about 58mpg

But they are slow and guttless, if you want to press on the passat will leave the '80 for dead. ( I should know, I have just traded up from one)

You do need to be careful to eek 50+ mpg from it. You can have some fun though.

I sat up the **** of a Subaru Impreza on cruise at 115mph the other Saturday! (On my private test track of course )

    Cheers,

    Steve.

I find it's best to ignore the computer and just work out the mpg from when you fill up.

    Mileage/litres at refill x 4.54 = mpg

My last tank in my 1.8 n/a =

    485miles/59 litres x 4.54 = 37mpg (local driving)

I have done that a couple of times and it came out the same as what the trip computer said. That nasty 1.6 automatic focus hire car I had the other day claimed 35mpg, worked it out to be 30mpg.
