Hi all, my '98 1.8T passat doesn't want to start after short journeys of 1 or 2 miles. It starts fine when cold or hot. The temp guage works fine, tho I'm not sure if the fans come on a bit early.

When it won't restart the only way is to leave it for 10mins or to put the accelerator to the floor and keep it there - then pray, otherwise it's flooded for half an hour.

I'd really appreciate any help on this, cheers.

Mine does the same - But when it does it it also seems to be suffering from a intermittent high idle speed (1800rpm). It's not all the time but any time I really need it

    hi guys,
a similar thing happened to mine the other week, after starting from cold,i didnt give the engine time to warm through [i usually let it idle until the auto choke goes off] then moved it a few metres then switched it off.when i came to restart it,it wouldnt have it,basically i think i flooded it and had to floor the accelerator to start it.

from then on,i always allow the car to idle until it goes to normal idling revs.

Hi Roy, yep that's it, exactly what mine does. Any answers?

What do folks think about idling the car to warm up? Audi/Vw always say drive straight off on starting and not to idle. Does anyone know why?

bugger what vw says,i would have thouught it makes more sense to let the automatic choke go through its cycle,a bit like after a hard run,you really should idle the car for at least 30 seconds to let the oil cool.
