    Hi

I have recently purchased a 1996 2.0l estate with automatic transmission for my better half and have been searching both this site and the wider web for information.

I want to service the box (drain & refilll, clean filter etc.) and am trying to find out if:

    a) it's serviceable
    b) the correct ATF to use
    c) any sites that may have info

I can hardly find any information at all for the MkIII auto including what type of box is fitted etc. - I guess that it wasn't a particularly popular option when new?

This particular car's clocked up 161K miles and drives as sweet as the proverbial nut.

Any light that can be thrown on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

It should have a CLK code box which is an 01M series also known as the AG4. The VW part number for the oil is G 052 162 A2 but is just conventional ATF conforming to Dexron III standards. You need cap 01M 321 435 B for resealing the filler after work, gasket 096 321 370 if you want to remove the sump plate to change the filter 01M 325 429 and you also need seal 01M 325 443 for the filter and seal N 013 811 5 for the drain plug. Filling the box up requires VAG-COM so that you can monitor the temperature of the ATF which has to between 35°c and 45°c to set the level correctly.

Wow! Thank you for the extremely comprehensive reply.

If you don't mind me asking, was that from the top of your head or copied from some other resource?

I have VAG-COM software and a Hex CAN BUS USB ODB-II lead from a previous foray into VW motoring (an 'S' plate Passat) - would this do the trick as far as monitoring the ATF temp?

I couldn't locate a dipstick for the transmission. Is that because I haven't looked hard enough or because there's a fill level indicator somewhere?

    Once again, many thanks.

    Julian

There is no dipstick which is why you could not find it. The level is set by removing a plug in the pan at the checking temp and letting the excess fluid low out. PM me your email address, I think you can do that now.
