    Hi all,

I'm still struggling to return a good MPG from my 97 A6 and now with the cost of fuel soring it is looking like spending some cash to improve it would be well worth it!

Before I spend some cash I' trying to satisfy myself that 36MPG (About 540 Miles from a full tank) can be improved and is bad in the first place and also what things can commonly cause bad figures.

I've had it on VAG-COM but returned no error codes so don't know where to start!

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Chris

I also had this problem and discovered that some helpfull soul had remapped the ECU to give me 160+BHP! I've yet to discover the original mapping to take it back to 130BHP and 50mpg. I'm looking into it with some tools from fleabay...

New good quality injector nozzles, a new maf & adjusting the static timing can generally bring back lost mpg on tired TDI's.

All my original bins are for VE engines & 115's, but some kind soul will give you the original files for your 130. (if you need them)

Do I need a torque wrench to change the injector nozzles, or is this a simple change?

    Cheers,

Only basic tools are required for a nozzle change.

How easy is it to adjust the static timing and would there be any other symptoms of it being out?

The car seems to run fine and feels pokey enough but I have never driven another and it has had the poor MPG since I have had the car.

Cheers for everyones help so far!

It is relatively simple to adjust the static timing, but can be fiddly.

You also need vagcom or similar to check each adjustment until it is correct.

On early models, you loosen the bolts attaching the fuel pump and rotate the pump body fractionally.

On later 1.9 VE engines, you alter the pulley/pump relationship on the pulley.

The car will run ok as long as static timing is within range to start the car, as once the engine is running the timing is dynamically controlled to a certain degree , however if the timing is not spot on (generally retarded, belt stretch etc) economy will start to suffer, the engine will become louder and in extreme cases hard to start.

Must have been a bad map; some maps improve MPG

It can be improved, my 110 bhp '99 A6 averages about 48 or so, and I have a pretty heavy right foot. Imagine spending 33% less on fuel.

    Hi,

I was hoping for figures like that! Is that calculating when refilling? How many miles do you usually get out of a tank?

    Cheers, Chris
