Good afternoon and Happy New Year to you all!

I recently purchased a 1999 New Beetle Automatic 2.0 litre from a non VW garage. Test drive was OK and I happily purchased the car. However, on the 2nd day of ownership the yellow emissions light came on and stayed on. I contacted the garage who suggested that I should take it to another garage who specialised in engine management and the car would be repaired under warranty (3 months). I did suggest that it may be better to take the car to VW main agent but they insisted that I went to this independant.

On the first visit they reset the light and asked me to inform them if it returned which it did that same evening. I returned the car which they kept all day and replace a front lampada probe. Picked up and ok till the light returned on the drive home!

Returned again and rear lampada probe fitted. Picked up but fault returned following day. Now also had problems with starting when engine warm.

Returned to garage who said rear probe was sluggish and this was replaced 2 days later. OK for 2 days then light/fault returned.

Back to garage for 5th time where air mass unit replaced. Car OK for 2 days then light/fault returned. Car now very unhappy starting from cold.

The garage mechanics have always been very pleasant and helpful but they seem to be making things worse not better. The car seems thirsty when the light is on and certainly a little lumpy. Seems much smoother when I picked the car up with light off.

Little bit at my wits end as I have read threads on this and other sites and there does not seem to be a definitive answer to this problem.

    Can anyone help please?

    Many thanks.

    Cheers

    Hi All,

My good friend Minnie Bannister has a W-Reg Beetle and had same problem with emissions light today.

Took it to local garage who noticed that one of the vacuum hoses was split and sucking in air thus causing Beetle to use more petrol than necessary - vacuum hose replaced, problem solved.

Not all these problems are sensor related - and I think some garages are a little unscrupulous in creating "work"
