    Hi,

I have a 170 gt with standard oem bulbs, I would like to try a set of upgraded bulbs to give me a xenon look.

I have seen the m-tec superwhite ones and philips x-treme ones too which look good.

Has anyone fitted either of these, I like the xenon look and am trying to replicate that without using hids as my car does not have the projector lenses I wont do the conversion.

Any experiences of upgraded bulbs would be much appreciated, especially in the vw housing as I have seen posts where the vw silohette logo has burned/turned brown!!!

    Cheers everyone :-)

Ahh, im now a master with HID bulbs,

    I cant help you otherwise,

I would have thought your GT would have had conversion lens, hmm strange.

Contact me if u have trouble about hid lens, i can get them very cheap and send them off, or i can help you with instructions etc...

    Sorry otherwise =(

I am interested in getting HID's fitted. What do you get with them i.e. the full headlight unit? I have the standard GT Sport headlights which are shown below. I would value any input

I read someplace that if your headlight unit isn't built for xenon lights or brighter bulbs then they can cause a lot of glare for oncoming drivers and general drop in light quality. I can't verify this myself but you would want to find out first. A pair of xenon headlight units can set you back 700-1000€.

    Hi,

The department of transport have made it pretty much illegal to retrofit hids now unless you meet strict criterias, look here:

    http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps

I am a huge fan of hids and have fitted them to numerous cars. Only certain headlights are suitable for hids due to the way the light is projected though. I cannot believe that for your 20k vw put non projector headlights in the gt's, absoluetly rubbish lenses.

The Philips X-Treme lamps are a good upgrade on older cars but I don't know how good they would be versus the lamps in your GT.

I couldn't get the X-Treme lamps for my old A6 but even the next best lamps made a difference.

I've seen the X-Treme lamps in a 206 and they were rather good.

What kind of kit did you use? Did you have to change the headlight unit?

I'm about to order a couple of sets of Philips X-treme headlight bulbs. I used to use the Philips 50% brighter bulbs in my Focus - they were a vast improvement on the standard bulbs. These X-treme bulbs are supposed to be even better. They were the Auto Express Accessory of the year in 2007. And they are a lot cheaper than upgrading to (possibly illegal) Xenons.

Well found, I saw the award but not the link to the article. Any chance you could post a few pics when you have installed them to show the difference? I was thinking of the m-tec superwhite bulbs but put them on hold when I saw these.

I found a great rticle with excellent picture comparisons here:

    Well worth a look.
