I recently bought a GT TDi 2.0l (54 reg) and at lower speeds 25-40mph the turbo whines like cat!

Is this a sign of problems to come? Does it need replacing?
And can they be reconditioned/fixed or do they need complete replacement?

If so any ideas where to get it done - I live near Stafford.

    Many Thanks!

My Mum-in-law has a 1.9 TDi (105 BHP) 2008 Golf Match. Recently the car has developed a whine from the engine only on change up at lower revs and speed.

She went to VW Warrington today and they put it on the Diag. machine - no faults found.

The tech that went out with her said he could her it and then said with er particular engine a number of people had report this whining noise.

He said it was just normal

    Anyone else not any comments/advice

    Thanks

My 57 plate 1.9 TDI Match also has an audible whine, that I assumed was the turbo. I thought it was normal? However, my old Skoda Fabia 1.9 TDI didn't make as much noise!

Hi, My 56 plate golf does not have a whine but a howl at certain revs. The dealer checked with VW and I was told that a certain batch of turbos produced this noise. Also its tone doesn't directly relate to speed or revs

Just seen these posts. Started a new thread on this issue. My Mk5 TDI does the same - a faint whine varying with engine speeds. My car has only done 23,000 miles.

    Seems like a common prob.

    A previous car - a 1.9TDI Bora - did not do this.

Just to add on this one, I have said my noise sounds like a police siren in the distance. Trawling on Google yesterday, I came across a BMW site and one punter described the noise from his Beemer as being like a distant police siren.

That is exactly what my noise is. Taking it in this morning for something else (dodgy cruise control switch) so will see what they say about this.

    But that's the noise to a T - a distant siren.

A common problem with the BKD engine, so much so that my VAG TPS keeps two turbo’s on the shelf. I have got to do one next week.

Well. interesting. Got my car back from main dealers this afternoon. Main reason for visit was to replace a faulty Cruise Control switch. The whine was said to be normal! I said I didn't get the same noise on a 1.9TDI Bora that I owned previously and was told the Mk5 used a different turbo. The service manager maintained that he took several different cars from stock home and they all made this noise to a greater or lesser extent.

He actually performed a passable imitation of the noise. The only other comment he made was that, sometimes, the blades could get a bit of carbon on them especially if the car hadn't been in regular use for a while.

Not completely convinced but have most of 12 month VAG approved used warranty left. if it gets worse i will be back!
